Suzette Munnik

Education Director, Xiem Clay Center

Suzette received her undergraduate qualification in Ceramic Art and Design from the Johannesburg School of Art in 1970 followed by National Higher Diplomas in Ceramics (1981) and Tertiary Education (1983) from Technikon Witwatersand. She has held various academic positions in South Africa from 1977 to 2003 at the University of Natal, University of Cape Town and at the Technikon Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. She was Program Leader in Ceramic Design, Department of Product Design from 2001 to 2003 and Head of Department and Associate Director in Ceramic Design, School of Art and Design from 1986 to 1989. Her experience in course design and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level is extensive. Suzette has published and lectured on the subject of ceramics history and has designed and conducted foreign study tours in China. Africa and the United Kingdom. Suzette is a prolific potter and her works are found in both public and private collections. She has participated in over 19 major exhibitions since 1985 and curated or juried more than 10 shows over the same period. Suzette joined Xiem in August 2004 and is responsible for all education programs at the Center.

Carol received her BS at Ithaca College and MFA from the New York University. She taught ceramics at Block Vacation Home, New York, Motion Picture Television Country Home, Woodland Hills, and Otis College of Art and Design, Westchester, California. She established her pottery studio in 1977. Currently, she is teaching ceramics at the Clay House, formerly Pot Farm, in Santa Monica. For more info about Carol's work email: arrowcg@verizon.net

Carol Aronowsky

 
 

Jim joined the Xiem faculty in the summer of 2004. A dedicated and gifted potter, Jim is an extremely popular throwing instructor who works with all ages and skill levels. Jim also devotes considerable attention to his own studio production, in which he uses warm colors and incised design to enrich the surfaces of his robustly thrown teapots, jars and platters.

Junzo Mori received his undergraduate degree from USC. A native of Japan, Junzo is an active potter and participates in shows throughout LA. Junzo joined Xiem in late 2003 as a member and shortly afterwards took on the responsibility of studio technician. With years of firing experience and with the sensitivity and care of an artist, Junzo ensures that work in the studio is properly fired. Junzo is a teaching assistant to Suzette Munnik in the for-credit ceramics program Xiem presents for students from Occidental College.

Kevin Nguyen is the founder of Xiem Clay Center. He received his BS in Industrial Design from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California. He worked on staff for two leading design consultancies - Hauser Inc., and Designworks/USA, a subsidiary of BMW. In addition to his work in ceramics, Kevin has been recognized with various national awards for product design. In 2002, he worked as a teaching assistant in the Ceramic Department of Santa Monica College. He has exhibited his work in galleries and shows all over the state of California. Biliana received her MFA from the National Academy of Fine Art, Sofia, Bulgaria. She has exhibited and won numerous awards for her work. Currently, she is a Board Treasure Member of American Ceramics Society Design Chapter of Southern California.

Biliana Popova, MFA

 
 

Roger Porter received his BA with honor from the University of Texas, and MFA from the University of Arizona. Roger has an extensive 40 years of experience with glaze control, glaze calculation and color development for all temperatures. He is also very passionate about ceramic raw materials and technical literature. At present, he is teaching glaze calculation at Glendale Community College. Chris is the newest addition to the Xiem Clay Center faculty and his innovative approach and sense of style have already made him a very popular teacher. Chris is the owner and chief designer for Cristobal Design and his repertoire extends from the highly stylize forms of his masks and wall hangings to the simple functionality of architectural elements such as sinks and decorative installations for the home.

Chris McCormick
 
 

Ray studied painting and drawing at the University of San Diego, earning his BA in Fine Arts, with a minor in art history. He received his BFA from Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, where the fundamentals of painting, drawing, ceramics, design, and sculpture were emphasized, and then received his MFA in Intermedia in 1980. Ray is on the Board of Directors at McGroarty Arts Center, where he has been teaching ceramics since 1992. He has taught at Barnsdall Art Center since 1994. His teaching philosophy emphasizes skills as a pathway to creativity. Ray began teaching at Xiem Studio this year.

Karen Sullivan received her BA from Cal. State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California, and MFA from the Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, California. Currently she teaches Ceramics at Cal. State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California, and at Pasadena City College, Pasadena, California.

Tomasz received his MFA and PhD from the Academy of Fine Arts (AFA), Gdansk, Poland. He has been a faculty member of the AFA and freelance artist for many years. He has taught drawing, sculpture, and exhibited his work in many prominent places around the world. Henry Mead is a graduate of Harvard University and received a MFA at Alfred New York State School of Ceramics. He has won numerous awards for his work and exhibited them in many galleries across the United States. He also has been teaching ceramics for the last 34 years at Temple Buell College, University of Colorado, Clackamas Community College, and Pottery of Northwest. Henry is featured in the popular 3 part educational video series "Throwing Functional Pottery".

Ed O'Reilly received his BFA from Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, Missouri and MFA from Otis School of Art and Design, Los Angeles, California. Ed has spent the last 34 years of his life involved in ceramics as a student, studio potter, manufacturer and educator. It all started simply with, and is still driven by, a pure passion for the material and a constant drive to explore all of clay's wonderful possibilities. At present, he is a Vice President of Marketing and Design, B&W Tile Inc., Riverside, California, and a ceramic instructor at Glendale Community College, Glendale, California.
