Xiem Clay Center offers individualized instruction in ceramics for beginner through advanced students.We limit enrollment to 10 students per class and our students receive six weeks of professional instruction. Xiem studio is open for student practice during regular business hours - Tuesday through Saturday.

Your first bag of clay is free and all work produced during classes (up to 2,750 cubic inches) will be fired. Unless otherwise stated, class fees are $240. A deposit of $100 is required on registration.

Beginners please note: You will get dirty! Wear comfortable, washable clothes and please bring a hand towel

Hand-Building I

This course covers a variety of hand-building techniques including pinch, coil and press molding, with instruction in elementary techniques of glaze application.

Wheel-Throwing I

This course provides an introduction to working with clay on the potter's wheel and lays the foundation for personal development of basic skills in throwing, trimming and glaze application.

Sculpture

An introduction to basic principles of ceramic sculpture and the building of hollow sculptural forms from clay without the use of armatures.

Ceramics for Seniors:

For Seniors of all ages! Explore a variety of ceramic techniques at a more leisurely pace. This course will cover wheel and hand-building techniques, with an introduction to surface decoration and glazing.

Beginners Surface Decoration:

An introduction to the choice and application of ceramic surface treatments, including the use of slips, underglazes, glazes and overglazes.

Wheel-Throwing II

This course provides further instruction and support in the development of throwing, trimming and glaze application techniques.

Figure Sculpture

For students with previous ceramics experience - an introduction to modeling the figure in clay, working from a live model.

Surface Decoration Part II

Decoration can be applied at any stage of the ceramics process. This course covers the following:

Colored clay techniques:

  • Inlay

  • Agateware

Use of Oxides and Underglazes:

  • Painting

  • Pencils and Crayons

Glaze application:

  • Brushing

  • Resisting

  • Dipping

  • Pouring

  • Spraying

Decorative Glazing techniques:

  • “Majolica”

  • “Cuerda Seca”  

  • Glaze within slip trailed drawing

Surface Decoration Part I

This class introduces a wide range of decorative techniques for use on plastic clay, leather-hard clay and fired pieces.

Developing Texture:

  • Impressing and carving
  • Using and making stamps.

Formulation and decorative applications of Slips and Oxides:

  • Painting
  • Sgraffito
  • Mono-printing
  • Resist
  • Terra Sigillata

Making and application of custom decals and the application of gold luster.

ADVANCED CLASSES: Glaze Calculation

 

Glaze Calculation (class duration: 12 weeks)

Learn to make your own glazes. This course is designed for students and professional potters who have mastered the basic concepts of technical ceramics and have some familiarity with ceramic materials, basic bodies, various oxides and stains in glazing. This class meets every second Saturday over a 12-week period, to allow enough time for experimentation and firing of student work between class meetings.

Fees: $240 +$45 (lab materials) = $285

REGISTRATION:

Registration is accepted online (see table and links at end of this page) and by phone, mail or in person, on payment of $100 per class.

Unless otherwise stated, all class fees are $240.

We recommend early registration as class size is limited.

Classes will proceed according to schedule, provided a minimum of 3 students are registered by the Friday before the session begins. In the event that a class is cancelled, students will have the option of transferring to another class or another session or having their fees refunded.
