Japan Pottery Tour 2008
Dates: September 4th – September 16th

This tour is designed by Junzo Mori, Xiem Clay Center's Studio Technician, to give local ceramic artists a unique introduction to the rich and varied practice of ceramics in Japan. Focusing on studio visits and personal meetings with potters who use both traditional and contemporary techniques, the tour will include visits to related cultural sites and ceramic collections and some free time for personal exploration in Kyoto and Tokyo. Mediated by Japanese-born tour leader Junzo Mori’s understanding of the American ceramics scene and local Japanese guide, wood-carver Yo Takimoto’s extensive knowledge of craft and Japan, nothing should be ‘lost in translation’ and tour participants will have the rare opportunity of gaining an insider perspective on Japan, culture and clay.
Tour Package
The package includes return airfare from LAX, all accommodation and transportation in Japan and entrance fees for museums, special events and studio visits.
Departure is from LAX Thursday, September 4th – returning to LA Tuesday, September 16th.
Accommodation (Tokyo, Mashiko, Bizen, Okayama, Akamura, Kyoto) will include hotels, a potter’s personal residence and a Japanese inn.
